A symmetrical shear wall, pierced by one row of large openings and of variable cross-section and loading, is analysed. The vertical shearing forces in the wall are determined by separating each portion of constant cross-section and loading and considering the interaction between the separate portions of the shear wall. The design of shear and core walls is reviewed. This is based on available methods of analysis, covering their elastic, elasto-plastic and dynamic behaviour.
